SMALL STEPS… Quotes From One of the Best Scripted Movies Ever Made – CONTACT

One of the Most Beautiful and Profound Movie Speeches Ever Written…

The following is from the script from the movie, Contact, one of the most insightful and scientifically repectable movies ever made. There is much more beneath the simple seeming words than meets the eye.

Ellie has “arrived” at her intergalactic destination and has a conversation with her father, Ted Arroway. It’s a conversation that “strains” credibility of her peers. The extent of her conversation with the “other species” is as follows…

Dad: Hi Sparks.

Ellie: Dad?

Dad: I missed you.

Dad: Oh I’m sorry I couldn’t be there for you sweetheart.

Ellie: You’re not real. None of this is real.

Dad: That’s my scientist.

Ellie: When I was unconscious, you downloaded my
thoughts, my memories, even Pensacola.

Dad: We thought this might make things easier for you.

Ellie: Why did you contact us?

Dad: You contacted us. We were just listening.

Ellie: Then there are others?

Dad: Many others.

Ellie: They all travel here through that transit system
that you built?

Dad: We didn’t build it, we don’t know who did.
They were gone long before we ever got here. Maybe
some day they’ll come back.

Ellie: All the other civilizations that you find, they
come here?

Dad: Not all.

Ellie: Is this some test?

Dad: No, no tests. You have your mother’s hands…
You’re an interesting species, an interesting mix.
You’re capable of such beautiful dreams and such
horrible nightmares. You feel so lost, so cut off,
so alone, only you’re not. See, in all our searching,
the only thing we found that makes the emptiness
bearable, is each other.

Ellie: What happens now?

Dad: Now, you go home.

Ellie: Home? But I have so many questions, do we
get to come back?

Dad: This was just a first step. In time you’ll take
another.

Ellie: But other people need to see what I’ve seen,
they need to see…

Dad: This is the way it’s been done for billions
of years. Small moves, Ellie. Small moves.

Why So Profound?

Beneath the Simple Words… Some Thoughts To Ponder

We are not alone. And, we are insignificant.

Yet we are equally insignificant as all else in the Universe.

This is perhaps the reason we must have such humility. For to continue as a species, we MUST recognize our true position lest we demolish ourselves.

But even MORE importantly… we must find life bearable. For without that, life has truly no worthiness. The one, the ONLY thing that makes it all bearable, this place of such beautiful dreams and terrible nightmares, is th KNOW that we are not alone, and that there are greater forces than us, that their existence must be taken on Faith.

Faith is a force. A will. An acceptance of humility, of friability, an acknowledgment of that which is far “greater” than us.

Faith is the glue that binds the consciousness of the Universe together.

The great question of whether there is a God is left to each of us to decide. Faith, God, Science and Man.

In the end, it is only through small steps that we can move forward. Small steps Ellie, Small Steps

There is so much richness and life in this movie. It was scripted with the assistance of one of the most imaginative, creative, independent, original scientific thinkers of our time – Dr. Carl Sagan.
